Currently one in five South Africans will be diagnosed with cancer. A recent study suggested that we could see an increase of as much as 78% in cancer cases by 2030. That’s why it’s important to ensure that you are properly covered in the event of a diagnosis.

But I have medical aid. Why do I need Biologicare?

What cover does biologicare provide?

BiologiCare provides an initial cash payment of up to R100 000 on diagnosis of cancer and will further cover Biological Cancer Treatment expenses of up to R900 000 in instances where your Medical Scheme cover is insufficient. The Biological Cancer Treatment benefit is payable for expenses incurred within five years of diagnosis and is paid out when your Medical Scheme will not cover the cost of biological drugs.

BiologiCare is available to all members of registered Medical Schemes regardless of your benefit option.

The upfront benefit is payable once per lifetime per family member which would include the principal insured, their spouse and all eligible children.

The top-up benefit is payable up to a maximum of 5 years after each new unrelated cancer diagnosis, per family member. This biological treatment benefit covers the cost of Biological Cancer Treatment in excess of the benefits stipulated in your Medical Scheme.

The following are excluded from cover:

  • Pre-existing cancer conditions;
  • Kaposi's sarcoma in the presence of HIV;
  • Lymphoma in the presence of HIV;
  • Skin cancer other than malignant melanoma; and
  • Tumours which are pre-malignant, non-invasive or cancer in situ
